The new leader of a landmark church has vowed to maintain its close ties with the community.
Reverand David Britton, 33, has taken over at St John The Baptist Church, on the corner of Leytonstone High Road and Church Lane.
His arrival was marked on Wednesday during a special ceremony attended by the Bishop of Chelmsford, Stephen Cottrell.
Rev Britton grew up in a clergy house and has followed in the footsteps of his father, who was also a reverend.
He lived in Uganda and various places in the UK before attending university in Leeds.
The reverand was ordained in 2010 and has most recently worked at a church in Streatham.
“I was attracted to Leytonstone for a number of reasons. I was attracted to the church and what they want to achieve here,” he said.
“There is a focus on engaging with the community. My initial plan is to get to know the area, to get to know the people.
“The church is a joyful, welcoming and transformative place where all people can come and share god’s love.
Rev Britton and his wife Rachael have three young sons.
He has taken over from Reverend Raymond Draper, who served the church for more than ten years.
