Silence has surrounded the death of a workman killed on a construction site in Leyton.
Shop owners and residents in Leyton High Road said they have been shocked and saddened by the death of a man in his 20s who was killed while working on a shop renovation on Tuesday, but have been given no information on the accident.
Emergency services were called to reports of a man being injured by a falling wall at around 11.20am.
The man who sustained serious head injuries was rushed to the Royal London Hospital where he later died.
Karuna Karan, 30, works in Berdan convenience store on the High Road.
He said the community has been left guessing what happened to the young man.
“We were told it was being turned into a restaurant and they were making two shops into one,” he said.
“The police and fire and ambulance and forensics came so we knew it was a big incident- but then after that, silence.
“They closed the road off outside the shop.
“Nobody knows anything about it, the police don’t tell us anything.
“There have been a few builders on the site some Romanian and some who didn’t speak English and then there were some Asian and some I think were Greek.
“It’s sad those men are probably paid £50 per day and this can happen to them.
Asif Tufall who was working in Islamic Impressions at the time was first alerted to the accident by the police corden.
He said: “I think this lot of builders started work around six weeks ago - they made a building area so I didn’t see them often, they were working inside.
“We don’t know what happened, it has all been very quiet, they are not telling us anything.
“The first thing I knew was when they closed the road, they shut it on the other side. It is very sad.”
Leyton resident Joan Hill, 70, said she was “extremely saddened” by the news.
“This shouldn’t be happening on a building site. I hope they get to the bottom of it for the sake of his family.”
The Health and Safety Executive and the police have launched a joint investigation.
