A graffiti mural depicting two soldiers fighting has received a mixed reaction and left some people “confused”.
The huge piece was completed by artist Connor Harrington on Sunday (May 24) in Ray Dudley Way, Walthamstow.
The internationally renowned Irish born artist created the scene from a photo of models in period costume as part of the Wood Street Walls project to brighten up the borough's blank spaces.
Annam Yousaf of Edison Close, who has lived in the area for 17 years, said she was confused by the meaning behind the 'massive' picture.
The 25-year-old said: “I love the graffiti and I think it is really well done but I don’t know why it is there. There is no point to it.
“It is violent and my parents definitely don’t like it when they come to visit.
“All the local people are a bit confused by it because we weren’t consulted, it just appeared.
“This is a friendly neighbourhood and I think a more positive image would have been better.”
Doreen Selvestr, 85, who lives directly opposite the new mural said the new addition has caused interest in the area.
“I have nothing against the painting but there are always people coming into my front garden to take photos of it,” she said.
“I keep thinking they are here to clean my windows. They stand right by my front door and it is quite startling.
“The redness really hits you but I don’t think it is particularly violent. To me he is playing hide-and-seek with his friend.
“I always say to my friends I needed a toy boy in my life but I wasn’t expecting this.”
A Wood Street Walls spokeswoman said the group had not received any negative comments about the piece and would be looking to address any issues residents have.
