The A406 was closed westbound, causing severe delays both ways, but has now been reopened.
The Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called to the A406, near Charlie Brown's Roundabout at 11:28am today to reports that a woman had fallen off a wall.
“London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended.
“The woman aged in her 40s was pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin have not been informed.”
“Officers are on scene and enquiries continue.”
The spokesman added the fall is currently not being treated as suspicious.
James Henderson, of Peel Road, South Woodford, was on his way home when he saw the air ambulance overhead.
He said: "I was on my way home when I saw the helicopters flying overhead, which usually means something pretty dramatic has happened.
"I couldn't see the actual scene, but I saw the helicopter land on the road and three medics run out to where the woman was.
"It's a very unusual scene, so crowds gathered on the High Road and Grove Road.
"I have lived in the area for 25 years and I've never seen anything like it."
