The best and worst achieving schools in Redbridge have been laid bare in newly-published GCSE league tables.
Published last week (January 19) the league tables show how well secondary schools across England did in their GCSEs in the last academic year (2015/16).
According to new Department for Education (DfE) guidelines, schools nationwide are now being ranked with its new “Progress 8” scoring system.
Replacing the old method, whereby schools were ranked by the number of pupils who got at least five A* to C grades including English and maths, Progress 8 is designed to give a broader perspective on student achievement.
The new rankings take pupils’ best eight GCSE or equivalent grades and compare them with others who got the same results as them in exams at the age of 11, giving a score between -1 and 1.
Schools that get positive Progress 8 scores are doing better than the national average and those who get negative ones fall below.
Redbridge’s top performing school was Woodford County High School in High Road Woodford Green with a score of 0.73.
This puts it 32nd in the table of 3,098 assessed secondary schools in the country.
Other higher achievers in the borough were Valentines High School in Cranbrook Road, Gants Hill (0.62, 83rd nationwide), and King Solomon High School in Barkingside (0.54, 142nd nationwide).
On the other end of the scale were Oak Parks High School in Newbury Park with a score of 0.02 (1,640th nationwide), and Woodbridge High School in Woodford Green with a score of 0.01 (1,590th nationwide).
Going by the old system, Woodford County High also came out top with 99 per cent of students getting at least five A* to C grades including English and maths.
Ilford County High School in Freemantle Road, Barkingside, was close behind with 92 per cent.
Oaks Park failed to score well using the old ranking system either, coming joint last in the borough with Loxford and Mayfield Schools in Ilford with a score of 52 per cent.
Redbridge Council and the best and worst performing schools have been contacted for comment.
