THE SMOKE that erupted when a tarmac machine caught fire could be "seen for miles around".
Photos emerged of the fire shows smoke billowing over the cityscape above Leyton yesterday afternoon.
Four fire engines and 21 firefighters scrambled to the fire on Lea Bridge Road.
The Brigade'a control centre said they received ten 999 calls as smoke issued into the sky.
Crews were called just after 1pm and had the fire under control by 3pm.
Firefighters from from Homerton, Stoke Newington and Leyton fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
