Are you looking for ways to reignite the coals of your creativity and leave your mark on the history of your community?

A competition has been launched for artists, architects and designers to produce ideas on how they think Walthamstow High Street should look in the future.

The street, home to Europe’s longest outdoor market, is set to undergo a makeover, and Waltham Forest Council in partnership with Matter Architecture are seeking entries.

The closing date is Tuesday, August 28 after which shortlisted entrants will be invited to present their ideas to the public for a vote at the HighTide Festival in Walthamstow on Sunday, September 16.

The Rosebank Villas route, connecting the high street with Walthamstow Central station, has been chosen for the project which aims to celebrate the local history, create a sense of arrival and enhance the space for businesses and shoppers.

Matter Architecture director, Roland Karthaus, said: "This is a unique opportunity to make a creative contribution to Walthamstow's much-loved High Street.

“We're really excited about working with the winner to help realise their ideas in time for Waltham Forest’s year as London Borough of Culture in 2019."

Cllr Simon Miller, cabinet member for economic growth and high streets, added: “As London’s first Borough of Culture we intend to have a lasting legacy of improvements integrated into our regeneration programme.

“This competition is part of that commitment and is a great opportunity for local artists, architects and designers to present their ideas on how our high street can be improved as well as for local residents to come along to the public pitch from the shortlisted projects so they can then vote on which scheme they prefer as part of the assessment process.”

The design brief can be downloaded from the council’s website.
