Mosques across the country invited residents in the borough to visit as part of national Visit My Mosque Day.

South Woodford Mosque welcomed residents and Ilford North MP Wes Streeting as part of the initiatives on Sunday (March 3).

Visitors were shown around the mosque and indulged in food, activities, henna demonstrations, Arabic calligraphy, children's performances and information about Islam, as well as observing prayer in the mosque.

Mr Streeting said: "Visit my Mosque Day is a fantastic initiative for our diverse community to learn more about one of the great faiths and how many Muslims in the community practice their faith. It’s been a great and engaging event for the local community, and I’m grateful to South Woodford Mosque for making me feel so welcome today."

Visit My Mosque Day was part of wider national initiative involing 250 mosques helping to address misconceptions about Islam.

South Woodford resident Wendy Russell who attended the day said: "It’s been an extremely warm and welcoming event. It’s great hearing about something so local that we didn’t know about."
