Video shows fire and smoke pouring out of The Mall, Walthamstow

Around 125 firefighters and 25 fire engines were called to the scene of the blaze in Selborne Road, Walthamstow.

Video footage of the scene taken by bus driver Gilchrist Thomas (above) shows fire and smoke pouring out the top of the building, with part of the roof collapsed.

London Fire Brigade was called to the fire at 7.40am today (Monday, July 22), and firefighters found part of the roof of the two-storey building alight.

The fire service at noon said the fire was under control, but crews would stay at the scene throughout the afternoon to damp down.

Earlier today, London Ambulance said a woman was taken to hospital at the scene of the fire. The fire service has since clarified that this was related to a separate incident. 

There were no injuries, it reaffirmed.

The cause of the fire is not known and is currently being investigated.

Bus driver Mr Thomas, 44, was driving his bus in the area when he noticed smoke coming out of the building.

He said: “I noticed a lot of smoke coming out of the building, like 30ft tall. I noticed a lot of people hanging around.

“I saw huge flames coming out of The Mall. The flames were like something out of a movie.”

The Mall has more than 60 shops on the lower floor and an upper area where restaurants are situated.

Capital and Regional are the owners of shopping centre, and said the situation is under control.

A spokesperson said: “We are aware of a fire at The Mall in Walthamstow. The shopping centre has been evacuated and the London Fire Brigade is on site dealing with the incident.

“Our immediate priority is site, customer and staff safety and until the fire has been extinguished and we can fully assess the situation we are unable to provide any further information."
