Demolition work has begun at an old council office building in Walthamstow.
Juniper House in Hoe Street will be knocked down to make way for 91 new homes, 50 per cent of which will be affordable.
The first residents are expected to move into the properties there in 2021 and the site will include a 53-place nursery as well as shops, a pocket park and cycle parking bays.
The development is expected to include environmentally-friendly measures such as heat pumps and solar panels.
The site is expected to be car free – though there will be exceptions for blue badge holders.
Cllr Simon Miller, cabinet member for high streets was there to put the first spade in the ground on site this week.
The site will house a mixture of homes including three and four-bedroom properties for families.
Waltham Forest Council will keep ownership of the land once the development is completed.
