An independent faith school has been ranked ‘Good’ by Ofsted after it was previously graded ‘Inadequate’.
Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College on Roding Lane, Chigwell, had their latest inspection in December 2019 with the full report published on Thursday, January 16.
The school was graded ‘Good’ in all areas, including quality of education, provision and personal development – a vast improvement following their 2017 inspection.
Inspectors noted how “welcoming, polite and courteous” students were and how pupils and parents had praised the friendly school community for students aged between three and 19.
A representative comment from a Year 5 pupil was: “It’s fun being in this school because you can make friends and learn new things.”
Major improvements on safeguarding were also noted with more secure fencing and gates installed and regular training being offered to teachers and staff.
The report reads: “Leaders place a high priority on pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
“Leaders ensure that pupils have a good understanding of how to be a responsible citizen in modern Britain. The school has improved strongly over the last two years.
“The school meets all the independent school standards and complies with schedule 10 of the Equality Act 2010.”
The school was advised to emphasise improvements on encourage pupils to read more and boost sixth form students to carry out independent studies and research.
Exams results at GCSE and in the sixth form, was also praised by inspectors, especially in mathematics and science.
The inspector’s report continues: “Teachers have good subject knowledge. Typically, they explain things well to pupils.
“Pupils are happy to ask for extra help when they need it, and teachers are quick to provide this additional support.
“Pupils know about a wide range of career opportunities, including university courses and apprenticeships.”
