A community has come together to create a 500-plant meadow to help encourage wildlife and biodiversity.
Wanstead Village Councillors, Paul Donovan, Jo Blackman and Daniel Morgan Thomas joined residents last Saturday (March 7) to create a new flower meadow on Christ Church Green.
The event, attended by almost 30 people, young and old, was organised by Vision and Wild Wanstead.
“It is important that the community knows what is going on in these areas, so that we can all be part of the greening process in Wanstead," said Wanstead Village councillor Paul Donovan.
"We have a very strong green base in Wanstead with Wild Wanstead, Cleaner Greener Wanstead, the Wanstead Community Gardeners and Wanstead Climate Action all contributing. On the council side Vision have been most supportive in helping make this project happen."
"It was great to see so many people from across the age range taking part in this planting project. It is the first in a number of initiatives intended to make Wanstead a greener, cleaner and more diverse place to live. The community support for this work is vital."
The flower meadow is a council 'grow zone' to boost wildlife.
Flower meadows can support eight times more biodiversity than regularly mown grass.
Wild Wanstead, Redbridge Council and Vision RCL have been working together to create a network of ‘Grow Zones’ across Wanstead.
Cllr Jo Blackman said: “Wanstead Village councillors are delighted to support this excellent initiative to improve biodiversity on Christ Church Green. We know that insects, pollinators and birds are vital to our ecosystem, but are under threat from urban living and widespread use of pesticides.
“Schemes like this are crucial to provide much needed habitats and will also enhance the beauty of our local area. We look forward to seeing the wildflowers in full bloom and hope to see more schemes like this across our ward and Redbridge.”
