East London hospitals announced another 21 deaths from Covid last week, including eight from more than a week ago.
During last week (October 12 to October 18), eight patients died from coronavirus at King George Hospital in Ilford and Queen’s Hospital in Romford.
Their NHS trust - Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) - also confirmed seven more deaths from the week before, raising the total to 13.
Barts Health NHS Trust, which runs five hospitals in east London including Whipps Cross, saw five patients die from Covid last week and one death confirmed from the week before.
This means that, in two weeks, BHRUT’s two hospitals have recorded 21 Covid deaths, compared to 13 at the five hospitals run by Barts.
It is likely that more deaths will be announced as they are processed in the coming days.
On October 12, Redbridge reported 93 new cases of the virus, well surpassing the highest total previously reported in the first peak of 54.
The number of new cases recorded in neighbouring Waltham Forest on the same day was 51.
Redbridge currently has two permanent Covid testing centres - in Gants Hill and Ilford - and hopes to open a third.
Waltham Forest has two Covid test centres, in Walthamstow and Leyton.
