The second wave of coronavirus in Redbridge is now double the size of the virus’ first spike after more than 100 new cases were confirmed in just one day.

The NHS trust which runs Ilford’s King George Hospital also recorded more than double the Covid deaths last week of all other north east London NHS trusts.

King George Hospital and Queen’s Hospital in Romford, managed by Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, confirmed 17 deaths last week.

Barts Health NHS Trust, which manages five east London hospitals including Whipps Cross, confirmed six deaths and Homerton University Hospital in Hackney confirmed one.

The six deaths recorded at Barts Health NHS Trust include one retroactively linked to coronavirus from April 6. The reason for this delay is not known.

On October 21, Redbridge saw 110 new coronavirus cases confirmed, the highest number ever recorded. The biggest one-day spike in the borough during the first wave was 54 on April 7.

On the same day, neighbouring Waltham Forest saw 67 new cases confirmed and Havering saw 48.

Tomorrow at 6pm, Redbridge leaders will hold a question and answer session via Microsoft Teams for residents to get more information about the situation in the borough.

The borough’s third permanent Covid test centre opened on Charteris Road Car Park in Woodford last week.
