More than 50 deaths from coronavirus were confirmed by east London hospitals last week, while Redbridge recorded more than 150 new cases in one day.
During the week from November 2 to November 8, hospitals across east London confirmed 23 new deaths, more than half of the number who died in London overall.
A further total of 28 deaths were retroactively confirmed from previous weeks.
King George Hospital in Ilford and Queen’s Hospital in Romford, both run by the same NHS trust, recorded 11 deaths during the week and 22 from previous weeks.
Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Whipps Cross in Leytonstone, along with four other inner east London hospitals, recorded 12 deaths during the week and six from previous weeks.
Redbridge remains a hotspot of cases in London and recorded 157 new cases of the virus on November 2, almost triple the highest spike during the first wave.
During a meeting with Redbridge councillors on Thursday (November 5), it was confirmed there were 175 patients with coronavirus patients in King George Hospital and Queen’s Hospital.
Almost one fifth of the two hospitals’ beds are occupied by patients with coronavirus.
