There will be reduced services on the Tube, rail and buses on New Year’s Eve as Transport for London reminds people to stay at home due to London being in Tier 4 restrictions.

TfL services typically run all night and free of charge on New Year’s Eve, but TfL are reminding Londoners that “this New Year is different” and services will be reduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bus and rail services, including the Overground, will follow a standard Saturday schedule while the Tube will see a reduced service with several stations closing at 11pm and no all night service.

Westminster, Chalk Farm and Charing Cross stations will close at 11pm while Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus and Embankment will move to exit and interchange only from 11pm.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has reminded Londoners to stay at home on New Year’s Eve to help stop the spread of Covid-19, with cases particularly high in the capital.

Mr Khan said: “London is still in Tier 4 restrictions which means that we must all stay at home. I ask all Londoners to continue to follow the rules to help protect one another and stop our already-stretched NHS from being overwhelmed.”

New Year’s Eve typically sees up to 100,000 people lining the streets for a view of the famous end of year fireworks display, but the Covid-19 pandemic has meant that the event will not take place this year.

Instead, BBC One will be airing a special broadcast to reflect on 2020 and celebrate the start of a new year.
