A Romanian homeless man who wrapped up in a shower curtain to keep himself warm at night, was graced by the love of the community.
Anil Blaggan spotted the homeless man sleeping under a trolley shed at High Street Barkingside, and approached him to try and help.
She explained that there was a language barrier, but she could make out he was Romanian. So Ms Blaggan went to find a friend who speaks the same language and the two discovered the man was homeless since Covid restrictions after his car wash closed and he was unable to pay his rent.
Talking to MyLondon, she said: “I went home, grabbed some blankets, gloves, socks, food and drink as he was using an old shower curtain to cover himself and looked cold.”
Word about the man then spread on Whatsapp groups and social media, in hope to find a permanent housing solution.
Many members from the community offered their support, and £600 was raised to put him in a hotel and help him fly back to Romania.
The two then helped the man to give him a Covid test for his flight back and arranged for his transport.
The man returned to Romana, where Ms Blaggan says he is “in a much better shape.”
She said: “At some points, he cried as he believed he would never get home and he would not be able to leave the streets.”
The charitable helper credits her Sikhism faith in wanting to help rough sleepers.
