It may have been the year the Second World War broke out but the scene on the left shows some shoppers and traders stopping briefly to be caught on camera for this picture of the market in Walthamstow High Street in 1939.
We have been looking back through our archives and are again pleased to bring you some more pictures showing how many of our traditional high streets have changed over the past 80 years and earlier.
This week the focus is on Epping, Leyton, Loughton and Walthamstow.
If you have pictures and memories of growing up in Epping Forest or East London you would like to share, ask to join our nostalgia facebook groups at www.facebook.com/groups/eppingforestnostalgia/ and www.facebook.com/groups/eastlondonnostalgia/
