After a recent serious accident, a petition has been launched calling for speeding controls and safer pavements on Hermon Hill.
Councillor Jo Blackman is reported as saying that Hermon Hill is “quite high” on Redbridge Council’s list for road safety improvements and she shares the frustration it is not happening more quickly.
As Councillor Blackman is cabinet member for highways, and Labour have been in power for almost a decade in Redbridge, you may wonder why nothing has been done about this sooner
Many people living in residential roads in Wanstead are also frustrated. Redbridge Council has an official policy to move towards 20mph speed limits in all residential streets. Residents in streets like Nightingale Lane have complained for some years about their street being used as a high-speed rat run and have asked for traffic calming measures, or interventions to stop people driving over the pavement. Yet nothing seems to have happened.
We believe Redbridge should have the safest streets and more investment is needed in our streetscape to make walking, cycling and public transport better. That will start with an proper investigation into how to make Hermon Hill, and surrounding roads, safer for all.
