The M11 southbound near Chigwell is currently closed due to a "serious incident and police investigation work".
The stretch between junctions 6 and 4 has been shut to allow emergency services to work at the scene, National Highways said.
They added the carriageway is likely to remain closed for a number of hours and advised road users to expect disruption.
Essex Police are leading the incident and have been contacted for more details.

There is currently very heavy traffic on the M11 north of the M25 junction, around Epping and heading into Chigwell.
Diversion route
Road users are advised to follow the Solid Circle diversion symbol on road signs.
- From the M11 southbound & M25 anti-clockwise:
- Exit on to the M25 anti-clockwise. Continue to J26 and exit.
- At the roundabout take the first exit on to the A121 Honey Lane.
- At the Wake Arms Roundabout take the fourth exit on to the A104 Epping New Road.
- Continue on the A104 to the Waterworks Interchange with the A406 North Circular.
- Take the first exit on to the A406 North Circular eastbound.
- Continue to the M11 J4 Redbridge Roundabout.
From the M25 clockwise:
- Exit at J26 and take the third exit from the roundabout on to the A121 Honey Lane.
- At the next roundabout take the first exit to remain on the A121 Honey Lane.
- Then continue to follow the above route.
If past J26 on the M25 clockwise then:
- Continue to J28 of the M25 and exit.
- At the Brook Street Roundabout take the fourth exit on to the A12 westbound.
- Remain on the A12 to the M11 J4 Redbridge Roundabout.
