WORK on a new M11 junction just north of the existing Stansted sliproads could start in four years.
The Highways Agency has revealed that its preferred route' for improved access at M11 (junction 8) and the A120 is a new so-called junction 8B.
Transport Minister Tom Harris said the proposed road improvements include a new junction closely linked to the existing junction 8/8A, and a replacement junction at Trinity on the A120 to replace the existing junctions onto the A120 Thremhall Avenue.
The scheme also includes the widening of 0.8 miles (1.2 km) of the A120 between the existing three-lane section and the replacement junction.
Mr Harris said: "The announcement confirms our commitment to a safer and less congested M11 and A120. These improvements, once delivered, will also be a boost to the economy, both nationally and regionally. The Highways Agency has proposed this route as the best option for traffic needs in the future."
The two junctions are essential to the proposed expansion at Stansted Airport. Work is dependent on the outcome of the airport's second runway planning application, which is expected to be submitted soon.
Airport operator BAA will fund the whole works under agreement with the Highways Agency.
The next stage for the scheme is the publication of an Environmental Statement and draft Highways Act Orders.
Their publication will provide a further opportunity for people to comment on the proposals.
Subject to funding and successful completion of the statutory procedures, the work is planned to start in 2012 with completion by 2015.
