SPURS boss Juande Ramos knows his side have a mountain to climb to keep their Cup double hopes alive.

The Carling Cup winners suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat last night in the first leg of their last 16 Uefa Cup clash with PSV Eindhoven.

New £2million signing Gilberto gifted the Dutch champions the lead with a 34th-minute mistake, which was punished by striker Jefferson Farfan, which leaves the Londoners facing a massive task in the return leg next week.

Ramos said: "It's going to be very, very difficult. It is clear that we're going to have to improve our performance so much if we're going to get through."They played better than us.

"Their team is actually very good. They play regularly in the Champions League and have real quality."

The Spanish coach, who also saw his side lose 4-1 at Birmingham last weekend, also feels they are still suffering a hangover from their Wembley heroics against Chelsea.

He continued: "This was our strongest team but PSV still won.

"It will now be very difficult for us. You could say it is a reality check. We haven't played well since we beat Chelsea - we have lowered our tempo."

Ramos however refused to blame defender Gilberto for his mistake. He said: "We're not going to blame him for the defeat. He had been injured before and hasn't got the rhythm yet to his game."

And on a sorry night for Tottenham at White Hart Lane midfielder Jermaine Jenas was carried off on a stretcher after badly twisting an ankle and could miss next week's second leg.
