A WOMAN who was sadistically attacked by a mugger as she lay helpless on the ground has spoken out about her ordeal to warn others to take greater care.

The 25-year-old had her phone and handbag snatched by a thug who made off before needlessly returning to where she lay in Montalt Road, Woodford Green, to brutally kick her and shout obscenities.

She said: "I was walking home from Woodford Station at about 8.30pm after going to my gym in Baker Street.

"I was talking happily on my phone and crossed the street when I saw this guy who looked a bit dodgy.

"When he reached me he grabbed my phone and I just remember being pushed to the ground. I was hanging on to my handbag and he went to kick me in the head.

"He was walking away but then came back and kicked me in the side. He started shouting abuse at me before grabbing my gym bag and making off with that too.

"I always felt safe and never threatened walking around - especially not near my own home - but now I am scared.

"I have only done the journey once since it happened and didn't feel good. Now I will be getting a lift or taking a cab."

The attack took place on Monday as the woman was walking on her usual route home from work.

The mugger is about 20, 5ft 5in tall, black or mixed race, with black hair and stubble, of light build, with small facial features and was wearing a grey sweatshirt.

Police would like to trace a pizza delivery man on a scooter in the area who may have seen the robber as he fled the scene.

Investigating officer Det Con Bronwyn Garnham at Chingford CID said: "This was a vicious attack which left the victim shaken and distressed.

"I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time who witnessed the incident, or has information, to contact me as soon as possible."

A spokeswoman for Transport for London warned commuters to take extra care when leaving public transport as muggers can be lying in wait.

She said: "Passengers should ensure valuable items are not visible, carry your rucksacks and hand bags in front, do not take phones out when leaving stations and not to carry items in outer pockets of bags where they are easily accessible."
