Ilford Wanderers 39
Millwall 10
(Essex One)
ILFORD kept their faint promotion hopes alive with a comfortable win over the Essex One strugglers.
It wasn't all plain sailing for the hosts in the first half though.
While they scored tries from Dermott Mullins and Chris Smith, a converted score and penalty from the visitors ensured it was all square at the break.
Brian Scahill's men stepped up a gear in the second period and ran in 29 unanswered points.
Tries from Jimmy Lyons, Darren Donovan, Pat Crowley, Clive Bensor and John Dillon, coupled with two conversions from skipper David North saw Wanderers take total control in the second 40.
The result leaves Ilford four points behind the top two with just a couple of games to go.
But coach Brian Scahill hasn't completely given up hope of grabbing a top two finish.
He said: "I was really pleased with the spirit we showed in the second half and it was a good win in the end.
"We still haven't given up on the season yet, and while it is out of our hands in regards to what Dagenham and Maldon do, all we can do is win our games.
"So we will look to beat both Upper Clapton and Wanstead and be ready to pounce should either of the top two slip up."
