MAJOR developments which will change the face of Epping are on the cards.
Ideas are now being sought over how a landmark area of the town can be transformed.
The relocation of the junior school, in St John's Road, to a new primary school on the infants school site in Coronation Hill will free up a large swathe of land close to the town centre.
The Centre Point building, the district council depot site fronting the High Street and smaller sites in St John's Road next to the library and register office could also be developed.
A district council report states these could include the church hall site, the former rectory next to St John's Church, the garages and car park behind the library and the car park behind Barclays Bank.
Initial suggestions from residents have included the possible relocation of Epping Sports Centre from Hemnall Street to the St John's Road area which falls within the town's conservation area, Monday's cabinet meeting was told.
Liberal Democrat councillor Janet Whitehouse said: "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to provide first-class community facilities for Epping in the centre of the town.
"Epping Sports Centre, which has problems with disabled access and parking, could be relocated here and the existing site sold for residential development."
She added: "A group of Epping Liberal Democrats has discussed the St John's Road site and identified other community needs which might be provided for here.
"We are encouraging residents to let us know what they would like to see on this important site."
Conservative councillor and deputy council leader Chris Whitbread said: "It's an area that needs careful consideration. It borders the conservation area. I welcome the fact that residents are involved in the consultation."
A council report states: "There is the prospect of development that can improve and enhance facilities for local residents, and reinforce the social and economic vibrancy of this part of the town centre, including facilities owned by the council. There is also the prospect of new community and commercial uses, as well as social housing."
A development and design brief for the area will now be prepared.
