WHILE they may have recently won the Carling Cup, Spurs boss Juande Ramos has reminded his players that previous form counts for nothing, writes Iain Liddle.

After witnessing his side crash to a disappointing defeat at Manchester City on Sunday, Ramos has told the whole squad at White Hart Lane they are playing for their place in the team ahead of next season.

The Spaniard, who led former club Sevilla to consecutive Uefa Cup triumphs, is thought to have a transfer budget of around £40m at his disposal this summer and has warned his squad that nobody is assured of their place.

The elevation of young midfielder Jamie O'Hara from unknown to first-teamer in recent months is evidence that previous reputation counts for nothing under the new, more slimline, regime at White Hart Lane.

"I treat everyone equally within the squad and players know they have a right to play just as much as anyone else," said Ramos.

After their Uefa Cup exit at the hands of PSV last week, and tenth place seemingly the best they can hope for in the league, the season is effectively over. It is thought the Tottenham manager will use this time to rest some of his squad and give every player a chance to stake their claim for a place in his side before the expected summer clear out.

He said: "I make changes according to the requirements of each game, what I think are for the benefit of the team. From time to time you do need to give players a rest when they have played a lot of minutes themselves."
