SHOPPERS in Ilford have been surprised by the sight of a giant purple cross walking down the road.
But it was only friendly mascot Mark' the ballot cross taking a stroll around town to promote the upcoming London Assembly and Mayoral elections, due to be held on Thursday, May 1.
His visit to the borough was organised by the Electoral Commission as part of a publicity drive to get more people interested in politics and registered to vote.
It is estimated that as many as ten per cent of Londonders are not even registered.
British, Commonwealth and EU residents can register to vote by downloading a form from londonelects.org.uk or by contacting Redbridge Council, but must do so by Wednesday April 16 at the latest.
