Darren Bent was the hero as Spurs left it late to see off Pompey at White Hart Lane this afternoon.
The striker came off the bench to nod home a Dimitar Berbatov shot, before setting up a tap-in for Jamie O'Hara.
Tottenham were good value for the win in what was an entertaining game, though, not surprisingly, it never came close to reaching the heights of Wednesday's dramatic encounter with Chelsea.
Bent's goal was the 100th at White Hart Lane this season and kept the Lilywhites' record of scoring in every Premier League match.
The first half ended goalless, though Michael Dawson struck the bar with a thunderous effort, while Portsmouth's Sean Davis brought a good save out of Paul Robinson.
The game remained open after the interval, but Spurs struggled to make an impact until Bent came on with 20 minutes left.
The sub nodded home with ten minutes remaining and, two minutes later, delivered a low cross for O'Hara to slot into an empty net.
Tottenham coach Gus Poyet said: "It was a difficult game and we had to be patient, concentrate and know that sooner or later we would get our chance."
Tottenham: Robinson, Hutton, Dawson (Bent 70), Woodgate, Chimbonda, Lennon (O'Hara 70), Zokora, Huddlestone, Malbranque, Berbatov, Keane (Tainio 83).
Subs not used: Cerny, Kaboul.
