A MAJOR inquiry into the alleged fraudulent use of expenses has prompted 1,400 credit cards to be taken from Scotland Yard detectives.

Investigators have also still not accounted for almost £2m of spending, The Metrpolitan Police Authority (NPA) has confirmed.

Two serving officers and one former detective sergeant have already been arrested and bailed on suspicion of the wrongful use of taxpayers' money.

The Observer on Sunday cites Scotland Yard sources as saying further arrests over potential 'criminal activity' may follow and reports that a separate inquiry into alleged fraudulent claims by officers has been set up by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

An investigation by The Metropolitan Police Authority's directorate of professional standards is ongoing.

A total of £1.88m of expenses spending is unaccounted for and £98,000 is believed to be the sum currently under investigation.

There have already been extensive changes to the way the force monitors its expenses and the MPA has cancelled its contract with American Express in favour of a four-year deal with Barclaycard.
