MRS Farmer denies that Israel is a sectarian state (letters, March 27), yet Israel has passed a law which bars Israelis who marry Palestinians from bringing their spouses to live in the country.

Israel is the only society in the world that determines where people may live on the grounds of race or religion. The only other modern state to do this was apartheid South Africa.

Ninety three per cent of Israel (most of it expropriated from Palestinians without compensation) is reserved for Jews. In colonial and then apartheid South Africa, 87 per cent of the land was reserved for whites.

Israel is the only country in the world which defines citizenship by religion rather than place of birth. This results in the grotesque and unreal situation whereby someone in Woodford or Wanstead has the right to go and live in Israel, while eight million Palestinians are denied their homeland and rot in refugee camps.

Israeli racism is embedded in every aspect of the state. There are no road signs in Arabic, only in Hebrew and English.

Israel's housing ministry spends £14 per person in Arab communities compared with up to £1,500 per person in Jewish ones.

The solution to the conflict is quite simple. A single state for Jews, Christians and Muslims which gives everyone equal rights under the law.
