A recycling centre is currently closed after almost 30 tonnes of waste went up in flames.

Around 60 firefighters were called to Chigwell Road Reuse and Recycling Centre in Woodford Green shortly after 6am on Wednesday (October 5).

A shed was damaged but the London Fire Brigade says there were no reports of any injuries.

Station Commander Dave Reed, who was at the scene, said: "Around 28 tonnes of household waste was alight in a covered recycling shed.

"There was quite a lot of smoke in the area so we advised local residents to keep their doors and windows closed.

"No roads were shut but we had a lot of resource on scene so the surrounding roads were busy and we asked people to avoid the area if possible."

The fire was brought under control by 8.21am.

Eight fire crews from Woodford, Chingford, Leytonstone, Ilford, Stratford and surrounding fire stations were at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the fire brigade added.

Redbridge Council, which operates the recycling centre, has posted on its website: "Please note that the Chigwell Road site is closed due to a fire.

"Please use Jenkins Lane or Fritzlands Lane Reuse and Recycling Centre in Dagenham until further notice."
