Tube fares 2023: How much will the London Underground cost?

With the choice to travel via bus, taxi, the underground, overground, tram and even in the sky, the capital makes travelling easy. 

But, with so many transport services the cost of maintaining them grows each year, seeing a domino effect on the price of tickets. 

And that's no different for 2023, with tube and bus fares set to increase from next month. 

It comes after the news was confirmed in January when Mayor of London Sadiq Khan stated that Tube, bus, Overground, Elizabeth line, DLR and trams would all increase by 5.9%.

Khan said that he was forced to make the increase by the government in line with the 5.9% increase in national rail prices.

He said: "‘I froze TfL fares for five years from 2016 to make transport more affordable for millions of Londoners. But my hands have been tied since the pandemic by the strict conditions set by the government."

When are tube fares rising in 2023 and how much?

Transport for London (TfL) shared that the increase of 5.9% would be on March 5 2023. 

• Fares that are changing are: 
• Bus and tram
• All pay-as-you-go and paper single fares on Tube, DLR, London Overground and Elizabeth line
• Daily and weekly caps
• Daily, weekly and other Travelcards
• River Bus services
• IFS Cloud Cable Car

Most adult tickets will be increasing by between 10p and 30p, with the adult peak pay-as-you-go fare for a journey in Zone 1 set to be £2.80.

Plus, the new adult off-peak pay-as-you-go fare for a journey in Zone 1 will be £2.70. 

Also, adult off-peak pay as you go fare in a single zone (not Zone 1) will be £1.80 and cash fares, known as paper single and return tickets, for Zones 1-6 will increase by 40p to £6.70

How much are London bus fares? 

Bus and tram fares for adult pay-as-you-go fares will increase by 10p to £1.75, with the daily cap increasing by 30p to £5.25.

Additionally, the 16+ daily cap will increase by 15p to £2.55.

That means that the seven-day weekly cap will cost £24.70, the monthly will cost £94.90 and the annual, be £988.
