A detour was put into operation on The Ridgeway in both directions, according to the AA.
Motorists were asked to avoid the area to help avoid a heavy build up in traffic.
The road remains closed and a cordon is in place between Endlebury Road and College Gardens on The Ridgeway.
The cause of the incident is unknown at this time.
