A supermarket chain has shared two places in east London it wants to build new stores. 

Aldi revealed it is searching for new sites in a list of "priority" locations it wants to open new supermarkets in. 

Wanstead and Walthamstow featured on the list of 13 ideal locations the supermarket wants to come to next, which also included Notting Hill, Barnet and Hackney.

The supermarket giant is searching for sites in Walthamstow and Wanstead that could accommodate its standard 20,000 square feet stores, but also its 5,000 square feet Aldi Local stores. 

Aldi's site criteria is said to favour plots on prominent main roads with good visibility and access and, for their standard store sizes, somewhere to have 100 dedicated parking spaces.

The news comes as part of Aldi's interest in opening new stores within the M25, the result of a reported "strong demand for Aldi in the capital", according to the German supermarket chain. 

Aldi has pledged a £500 million investment into the effort, which will see it welcome an additional 100 stores in the region, creating around 3,500 new jobs. 

Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, said: “We want to make high quality, affordable food accessible to all, but there are still many areas in the capital that don’t have access to an Aldi."
