Shrek, his swamp and his band of friends have arrived in London and it’s the perfect family show to watch this summer.

After a successful stint on Broadway, Shrek The Musical will be taking over the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith this summer until August 31.

The musical is an adaptation of the popular fairy-tale stereotype-debunking film produced by Dreamworks in 2001.

With brand-new musical songs from Jeanine Tesori, this six-week summer performance promises a family-fun experience

The set takes a lot of aesthetic cues from the film, from Shrek’s Swamp home to the land of Duloc ruled by Lord Farquaad.

Antony Lawrence, who stars as Shrek, gives a comical performance of the grouchy, lovable ogre with the odd power ballad thrown in too.

Todrick Hall stole the show as Donkey, really bringing home the satire and adult humour, with his jokes having the adults in stitches.

Joanne Clifton brings fantastic vocals to the role of Fiona – the headstrong, beautiful princess who doesn’t quite fit the bill of a stereotypical princess – as she holds a belching competition with her protege Shrek, which had the audience in great deals of laughter.

One of the highlights for me was Cherece Richards as Dragon, who gave an amazing performance of the song "Forever", demonstrating powerful vocals.

James Gillan, who played Lord Farquaad, gave a unique, light-hearted spin on the character, bringing a great deal of fun, frivolity and sass to the role, which really came across during "The Ballad of Farquaad".

The show also features appearances from other familiar faces including the dress-wearing Big Bad Wolf, and of course Gingy with the iconic “Do you know the Muffin man?” scene.

The show ends with a final musical number in which all the cast sing “I’m a Believer” by Smash Mouth, which was fun to watch.

With lots of humour and a swamp full of songs, this musical is definitely a must watch this summer for the whole family.
