Four arrests have been made in Waltham Forest after more than 1,000 police officers were deployed across the capital over fears of unrest.

People in Walthamstow had braced for action by far-right groups yesterday evening (July 7) after a list threatening disorder at dozens of immigration advice services across the country was published.

A heavy police presence was seen in the area from 5pm, with some shops shutting early, and others boarded up.

But there were ultimately no reports of any far-right disorder, with at least 5,000 anti-racist counter-protests gathering outside the immigration centre instead.

The crowd could be heard chanting - “Whose streets? Our streets” - and - “Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here”.

Only one protestor chanting in response to the counter-demonstrators was reported to have been in the area, according to PA.

Late last night, the Met said that it had made four arrests in Waltham Forest as a result of its policing operation.

Two were over suspected possession of an offensive weapon – a lock knife and a golf club, one over suspected drunk and disorderly behaviour, and one over suspected obstruction of a stop and search.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine said: “Two large anti-racism protests took place in Waltham Forest and Finchley.

“The majority of people engaged with officers and complied with conditions. These events passed without major incident or disruption.”

Elsewhere, ten people were arrested in Croydon and one person was arrested in Hounslow.
