A small and quirky micropub has been named the best boozer in London for the second time.
The Little Green Dragon at the top of Green Lanes in Winchmore Hill took the title of the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) top pub in the capital this year.
It comes six years after the pub first scooped the award, and means it will now battle it out with 16 other pubs across the UK for the nationwide title.
A former shop, The Little Green Dragon became Enfield’s first micropub when it opened in 2017.
Named after the Green Dragon Public House, a former pub further along the road, the venue aimed to provide a community space for socialising and drinking, free from TV screens and slot machines.
The micropub offers an everchanging selection of four cask beers sourced from nearby microbreweries, and other independent brewers from further afield.
Real cider, perry and four keg beers are also on offer at the venue.
Traditional pub games such as table skittles and shove ha’penny are also popular with regulars.
The pub’s interior features unusual seating, from wall mounted benches to low sofas, and even repurposed bus seats.
Owner and founder Richard Reeve said: "What better year for this to happen that 2024, the Year of the Dragon! We are clearly delighted to receive this prestigious award.
"While the judging is mainly about the beer quality and selection, a large part of the criteria also centres around atmosphere and how welcome people are made to feel.
"So we have our great staff and amazing customers to thank too for everything they bring to the place!"
Andrea Briers, national coordinator for the Pub of the Year competition, said: “These amazing pubs really are the crème de la crème and I would encourage the public to seek out the 17 winners from across the nations and regions of the UK – they are top-tier pubs serving excellent beer, cider and perry, run by welcoming, hardworking staff.
“It’s also important to support your local all year round. With constant pressure from stubbornly high energy prices, fluctuating running costs and grossly unfair business rates threatening to drown pubs across the UK, it’s vital to get out and support the licensed trade.”
From the 17 regional pub winners, a shortlist of four will be announced in late September.
An overall UK National Pub of the Year will then be declared in January 2025.
