Universal Destinations & Experiences is exploring plans to open a new theme park just two hours from London, and we’ve rounded up everything you need to know.

While excitement around the project is high, a Universal spokesperson noted that it is too early to confirm details of the attractions or experiences that could be part of the potential development.

In April, Universal held public exhibition events to share its proposal with residents, businesses, and the wider community.

The company has made information available on its website, where locals can review the plans and provide feedback.

The public engagement period ended on May 3, 2024.

Where will the park be?

The chosen site is the former Kempston Hardwick brickwork’s location, to the south of Bedford town centre.

The potential 700-acre site includes the previously purchased 476 acres, along with an additional portion to the southwest.

The proposed location provides rail and airport connections to London, making it highly accessible for travel from all parts of the UK.

In terms of local travel, initial reports suggest that 35 per cent - 40 per cent of visitors would reach the park by train owing to the excellent transport links, with a further 10 per cent expected to drive to the theme park.

How will it benefit Bedford and the UK?

Not only will this amusement park be a major boost to local tourism, but it is also expected to create approximately 8,000 new jobs, rising to a whopping 10,000 by the 20th year of operation.

The project might become one of the largest single employers in Bedford and the UK.

Adherence to the principles of environmental conservation would be key in the forthcoming park's blueprint.

Thousands of new trees are expected to get planted within and around the site while ensuring minimal disruption to existing services such as healthcare providers.

Universal also plan to work with local institutions and businesses, boost tourism in the UK, and facilitate significant infrastructure improvements, such as potentially include rail and road upgrades.

Will the park be inclusive?

Universal Destinations & Experiences ardently espouses accessibility and inclusion, intending to make these core values a centrepiece of all their theme parks and resorts.

All the visitors regardless of their diverse needs will be made to feel welcome at the venue.

On its website, a spokesperson said: "We know Universal’s incredible experiences resonate with people of all ages and millions of UK residents travel to our theme parks and resorts around the world every year," said a representative of Universal Destinations & Experiences.

"In 2023, the UK welcomed 38 million tourists, and this number is growing."
