In this picture of Loughton High Road, c1900, Lopping Hall and its clocktower dominates the skyline on the quiet high street.
The town became well established when in 1615, a road was built northwards which became the main route from London to Newmarket and Cambridge.
By the 1700s, inns, smithies and shops developed to cater for travellers.
Today, Loughton retains much of its semi-suburban character.
