A child has been freed from the wreck of a car following a crash on a major road in Chingford. 

London Fire Brigade was called at 11.45am this morning (November 12) with an alert of an incident on the A406 North Circular. 

Two fire engines were dispatched to the scene where they discovered that two vehicles had been involved in the crash. 

In one of the affected vehicles, a child had become trapped and firefighters helped colleagues to free them from the wreck. 

The child has since been taken to hospital with a man who was injured in the incident. 

A spokesperson for the brigade said: "Firefighters are currently at the scene of a road traffic collision on the A406 in Chingford.

"The incident is causing significant travel disruption on the A406 in both directions and on surrounding roads and motorists are advised to avoid the area at this time.

"The person reported to be trapped has now been released from the vehicle by firefighters and taken to hospital. I can also confirm that they were a child."

According to the AA, congestion from the crash has backed up to Waterworks Corner and past Walthamstow. 

Traffic queues have reached through to Fore Street Tunnel in Edmonton and to the A10. 

London Air Ambulance has been flown to the scene in response to the incident. 

A spokesperson for London Ambulance Service said: “We sent resources to the scene including ambulance crews, an incident response officer and members of our hazardous area response team (HART).

"We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.

“We treated a child and a man at the scene and took them both to hospital by road. Another person declined further treatment.”

The Metropolitan Police has been contacted for a comment.
