Proposals for a new off-licence in Walthamstow have been approved despite concerns about antisocial behaviour.

KA Corner Supermarket will open up in a former launderette in Fulbourne Road after being given the green light by Waltham Forest Council’s licensing committee on November 12.

The shop will sell spirits and cans of beer, lager and cider, alongside groceries and general household items.

Though the Metropolitan Police did not oppose the plan or raise any concerns about crime, a total of 20 residents lodged objections.

One resident, in Queenswood Avenue, said a new off-licence open until 11pm each night “could exacerbate petty crime” and “attract further antisocial behaviour”.

Another living in Fulbourne Road argued: “As there are already four shops which sell alcohol [in the area], I really feel that another store opening with later hours could add to the issue of people drinking on the road.

“I have seen people drinking on the street corners at night and it is unsafe, especially in a residential area.”

A raft of conditions will be attached to the licence, which shop owner Tayfun Sar and his employees must adhere to.

CCTV must be in operation at all times and employees will need to ask for ID from anyone who looks younger than 25.

The shop will also be prohibited from selling beers, ciders and lagers with a higher ABV than 6.5 per cent, and spirits in bottles smaller than 25cl.

Residents nearby will also be provided with a phone number to call if there are any disturbances in the street, following a request from committee member Richard Sweden.

The owners agreed to monitor and disperse any customers who linger outside the store, in a bid to keep noise levels down and avoid disruption.

The licence was approved after a brief deliberation by the council’s licensing committee.

An opening date has not been set for the new shop.
