THE PETITION to save Waltham Forest Theatre, Lloyd Park is to expire on January 13.

Set up by teenage twins Lee and Nicky Caulfield and supported by campaign group Antiscrap, the petition currently has fewer than 300 signatures and campaigners are hoping for a last-minute surge of support.

Martin Adams, of Antiscrap, said: "The borough of Waltham Forest hasn't put much into the arts.

"They've let it run down and systematically dwindle."

The council is hoping to gain funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund to carry out regeneration work in Lloyd Park, including replacing the theatre with an open air performance space.

They have been given about £170,000 to work on a "stage 2 bid" and if this is successful, they will be given about £4.5million to carry out the work.

But campaigners would prefer to see the current theatre refurbished and restored to its former glory.

Mr Adams said: "It's something that we need in the borough."
