INTELLIGENT traffic signals are being installed to tackle congestion problems at a busy junction in Chigwell.
The new sets of lights - which will be operational at the junction of Manor Road and Fencepiece Road by the end of January - will reduce delays by calculating traffic build-up, and automatically adjusting the timings of the green-light phases accordingly.
The lights are connected to grids under the road which detect the length of traffic queues.
The Essex County Council scheme will also see a puffin-controlled signal crossing installed on every approach to the junction to improve pedestrian safety.
A council spokesman said: “We already have a few of these lights in Essex - on the A12 and in Boreham and Witham.
“They are not particularly common in the county yet because they involve quite a lot of infrastructure work and are quite expensive, but they are certainly very useful and justified in helping to ease congestion hotspots.”
Temporary signals will be used to keep traffic moving throughout the road works which are expected to finish on January 23.
