Police are now appealing for witnesses to the attack, which happened at around 12.20am near Londis on Cranbrook Road, Ilford.
It is believed the stabbing happened following an altercation.
Another man was also assaulted on Coventry Road nearby, where he sustained "serious head injuries".
Both are in hospital in a stable condition.
Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
Police said they had arrested three black men, but were looking for a further suspect.
