A WOMAN who was without gas for days on end says an elderly person could die of hypothermia if put in the same situation.
Pat Morgan, of Warner Close, Woodford Green, arrived home from holiday last Friday to find her gas supply had been suspended by the National Grid while work was being carried out on a nearby pipeline.
After telephoning the company, Ms Morgan was told she would be able to cook and heat her home again by Saturday, but after spending the entire weekend shivering without vital amenities, she was still without gas the following week.
She said: “They sent me a letter while I was away but obviously I didn’t get that so I arrived home to an already freezing house with no gas, no hot water and no cooking facilities.
“They told me it would be back on over the weekend but on Monday they still haven’t got back to me.
“They have given me an electric ring to cook on and a fan heater but it’s absolutely useless as my house is open plan so even if I have it on 24/7 it’s not doing any good.”
She added: “I’m only in my 60s but if you were an elderly person you could come back from holiday to this and die the next morning.
“I just don’t think people should have to put up with it.”
At 4.30pm on Tuesday a spokesperson for the National Grid said: “Our contractors are due to attend the property and hopefully the supply will be reconnected later today.
“We always strive to do what we can to resolve customer complaints as soon as possible and we are sorry that this matter was not remedied earlier.”
