FIVE fire crews were called to North Weald Airfield after a hurricane aeroplane crashlanded.
The aircraft was coming in to land at 11.40am today but suffered technical difficulties with its landing wheels, and tipped on to its nose as it prepared to touchdown.
Fire engines and ambulances attended the scene but the pilot was uninjured, and the situation was not treated as a major incident.
Damage was caused to the propeller and engine of the plane, which is believed to be the only flying Hawker Hurricane MK IIB in the world, but no fuel was spilt.
The incident was reported to the Air Accident Investigation Branch of the Civil Aviation Authority who agreed to allow the aircraft to be moved off the runway.
