A PROUD military man who led Epping's poppy-day parades has lost his battle with cancer.
Tony Willitt was with his wife Lesley at their home in Duck Lane, Thornwood, when he passed away on February 25.
The 70-year-old also leaves behind daughter Sue, step-son Paul, four grandchildren and a great grandson.
A former Coldstream Guard, Mr Willitt did six tours of duty in Cyprus during the 1950s, and his coffin was draped with the regiment's flag and carried by horse and carriage through Epping High Street on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 11.
The retired coach driver became a popular figure in the community after taking over the role of parade marshall for Epping's Royal British Legion in 2005.
Lesley, 43, said: "Tony would always lay a wreath on the Remembrance Day; when he shouted during the parade - everyone jumped to attention.
"He was born in Epping and lived here all his life and everyone knew him. I've already had so many cards and messages of support.
"I know I am his wife but he really was a wonderful man and it was only right he had a proper send off."
Mr Willitt, who was diagnosed with cancer in July last year, was laid to rest at Parndon Wood Crematorium in Harlow.
