FRAUDSTERS posing as police officers have been conning innocent victims out of money across Redbridge.
A man claiming to be a police officer investigating fraud asks for bank details, PIN number and in some cases bank statements.
One victim was even conned into withdrawing his entire life savings and handing over the cash.
Police are urging people not to reveal their bank details to anyone, even the police or the bank.
The callers ask victims to hand over their bank cards, which would be collected by a colleague, who on a number of occasions has been an Asian male, but recently has been a black male.
Occasionally they are contacted by their bank, asking them to assist the police in the fraud investigations.
The victim is told not to use their phone or inform anyone as the police are close to making arrests, before the fraudsters empty the victim’s bank account.
Four arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing across the borough.
If anyone calls or turns up on your doorstep, call 999. If you have been a victim of fraud, call 0300 123 1212.
