DEBDEN's snooker hall become the latest victim of the recession yesterday after administrators announced it had sunk into the red.

The club, which has played host to current world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan and snooker legend Steve Davis, was one of 30 closed nationwide after snooker clubs group Rileys was put into administration.

Seven jobs at the Torrington Drive venue were axed following a downturn in trade and mounting debts.

The firm's assets were sold to Valiant Sports, and it will retain 1,200 of 1,400 staff and continue to operate 129 clubs under the Rileys name.

Patrons of the Debden venue, which had nine snooker and 15 pool tables, are being directed to the next nearest clubs in Harlow and Woolwich.

A spokesman for administrators Ernst & Young said Rileys had been hit hard by the smoking ban and changes to gambling laws.

He added: "The company has been experiencing tough trading difficulties due to a downturn in trade and a heavy debt burden and were unable to trade outside of administration.

"Fortunately we have been able to secure a deal, which means 129 sites will continue to trade, and the brand and 1,200 jobs will be preserved."
