A MEDAL, awarded to a dog who was buried at a pet cemetery in Ilford after becoming a war hero, is expected to fetch £10,000 at auction.
Stray terrier-cross Rip won a Dickin Medal - the animal equivalent of the Military Cross - after he helped to sniff out more than 100 casualties trapped under bombed buildings during the 1940 German attacks in Poplar.
Rip's medal is now expected to fetch as much as £10,000 at a specialist auction house in April.
Rip's success as an unofficial rescue dog convinced the authorities toward the end of the War to train more dogs to trace casualties.
He was the first of 12 medal winners to be buried in the PSDA's cemetery in Ilford.
